“I was raised by parents that are very strict, they are very old and not like your typical young parents,” she says.

“The reason my sound is inspired by old-school music is because my dad loved a lot of maskandi and country music. My brother brought that side of R&B and house music.”

Career

Sun-EL has played a huge role in Simmy’s music career after he discovered and signed her to his label EL World Music.

Before their collaboration, She tried her luck at music competition shows Idols SA and SA’s Got Talent which turned out unsuccessful.

The duo first met during her studied at the University of KwaZulu-Natal, where she studied social sciences.

“We met back in 2013 through his younger brother. He asked me to sing for him and he asked why don’t we work on something. But at the time I knew I needed to finish my degree. After finishing my degree I moved to Joburg,” she recounts.

After releasing her debut album, Tegula Fairy, she earned the honor of being picked on Apple Music’s New Artist Spotlight for December.

“It’s weird. It’s not something that I expected. To receive such an honor is shocking, but I’m grateful for it.”

Simmy’s music inspiration came from the fusion of maskandi, country music, neo-soul and electro house music.

Her biggest music inspirations are Letta Mbulu and Dolly Parton and she will like to work with Sjava and Thandiswa Mazwai.

“The reception of the album has been beautiful. I have realised that there is a song for everyone on the album,” she says. “People are just choosing their favorites, from people who like slow jams and soulful music to those who like to dance.”

Moshe Denies Beating Phelo!

Television host Moshe Ndiki, has come out guns blazing to set the records straight on their troubled relationship problems with Phelo Bala. This follows after Sunday Sun reported that things were toxic lately between the high-profile couple, that they even headed to the courtroom.

According to the Sunday tabloid, Phelo was assaulted by Moshe, and he had to obtain an interim court order.

In his court papers, Moshe claimed that over the past few months the relationship had become abusive with Phelo assaulting him on several occasions. He claimed that Phelo had a drinking problem, and always starts fights after he booze too much.

In a statement released by Moshe yesterday, he denied the allegations that he had assualted Phelo, and said he is ready to follow the legal route to prove that.

Moshe slammed the angle the paper took to write the article with the allegations, and said the allegations are there to humiliate him, and are in extension of the abuse he has endured.

Moshe said there was a public violation of their private mediation on this matter, hence he chose not to expose their private differences.

In his statement which has since been removed, Moshe had used “My Phelo” which seemingly stated that they are still together, but Phelo was quick to correct him.

When Moshe was contacted by the publication he said they are fine with Phelo, but Phelo said that was the first lie, and said the second lie was calling him “My Phelo” in the statement which he has since deleted.

Phelo slammed him for “lying”, and said the truth shall come out.

Marah Louw has joined the flood of tributes pouring in for veteran actress Mary Twala, who died on Saturday at Netcare Park Lane Hospital in Johannesburg.

Mary’s son Somizi confirmed the star’s death, declaring: “The tree has fallen, I’m shattered to the core.”

Marah was shocked by the news of Mary’s death and told TshisaLIVE she is going to miss her laughter the most. She described her friend as a bundle of joy to be around with.

“I had the opportunity to work for a longer period with her when we were doing Lillian Dube’s show called Skwizas. It was crazy there. It didn’t feel like we were working, we would constantly laugh whenever we were shooting.

“I never saw her angry. We used to crack jokes and make fun of each other but she would never take the jokes to heart. She had so many funny things to say and I’m also going to miss her professionalism”.The singer admitted that as actresses aged they sometimes forget their lines, but Mary would say whatever came to mind and it would gel nicely with the story.

“Whatever she comes up with would be funny. And she was very professional. She could have run an acting school [to] teach the younger generation. I wish we had an opportunity to do that and have an academy. She left a hell of a legacy and I hope the younger generation will pick up on it and emulate her.”

Marah took us down memory lane to the time she first met Mary in 1969, when the pair were in the musical Skhali.

“It was joy to working with her and her husband Ndaba Mhlongo. She has joined her sweetheart. We are going to miss her but it’s God’s will, she has run a good race. She has never disappointed or been an embarrassment to the nation. She is my super star.”

She recalled the time she told Mary that her late best friend Miriam Makeba jokingly warned her not to get married to an older man, questioning how she was going to charge her “new battery with an old battery”.“I told the joke to Mary and Lillian. Little did I know that Mary memorised the story. One day, out of the blue, we were shooting. The late David Phetoe was my boyfriend on the set. He arrive at the house of Skwizas to check up on me.

“When he walked in, he said, ‘I‘m here to see Jemima.’ Mary was also part of the show and she asked, ‘Is this your boyfriend? Is this the man that you met and told us about? How are you going to charge your new battery with an old battery?’”

Marah said everyone on the set was in stitches, including David, causing them to forgot their lines.

“She made a huge impact because she has been in the industry for a long time. She didn’t behave like a diva or superstar. He was very simple and humble, and she never made people feel small when she walks in.

“She carried a lot of dignity, without having to display who she is. I have learnt a lot being around her. She shared her wisdom with me and I will forever be grateful.”
