Exclusive: Q&A with Breyton Paulse after ‘Masked Singer SA’ exit

in an exclusive interview with The South African.

Former Springbok Breyton Paulse, affectionately known as Machine, was unmasked as Monster on season two of Masked Singer South Africa. The episode aired on S3 (formerly known as SABC 3) on Saturday 11 May.

None of the celebrity detectives – J’Something, Somizi Mhlongo, Sithelo Shozi and Skhumba Hlophe were able to crack the case of Monster’s identity. While guest detective, Kurt Darren, who was the season one runner-up, initially thought Monster was Paulse, he later changed his guess to Kwagga Smith. Paulse expressed that he had lots of fun on the set of Masked Singer SA.

“Being Monster on The Masked Singer was loads of fun and an interesting experience. The detectives’ comments and guesses made me laugh, and I was impressed by how insanely secretive everything behind the scenes was. Kudos to everybody who is part of the show. It was a fantastic journey,” he said according to Primedia.

So, what did Paulse think of being on Masked Singer SA? He revealed more details on his experience in an exclusive interview with The South African.

What was your experience being on the Masked Singer SA set like?

It was the most adventurous journey, full of fun and laughter. I loved my Monster costume and it interesting to hear who the detectives thought Monster was – especially when they got it so wrong. I don’t see myself as a singer, so I was also surprised that I got the opportunity to sing twice and wasn’t sent home in the first episode. Of the two songs I performed, Joanna by Eddy Grant was my favourite performance.

How did you manage to conceal your identity until now?
Well, it wasn’t easy. I wanted to tell everyone about the incredible experience I had, but it you decide to play a game, you have to stick to the rules.

Do you have any behind-the-scenes memories you’d like to share?

The escorting to the studio was definitely another highlight for me. I felt like a rock star. Everyone on set is also so professional and the way they ensure everyone behind the scenes is top secret is amazing. Kudos to the team who have put this together.

What was your favourite part of your Masked Singer SA experience?

That moment before you go onto stage – such adrenalin and excitement.
