The Smiling Assassin: Where is former Kaizer Chiefs star Knowledge Musona now?

The Smiling Assassin, real name Knowledge Musona, is a celebrated Zimbabwean footballer known for his illustrious stint with Soweto giants Kaizer Chiefs. According to Transfermarkt, the Zimbabwean talisman is one of the club’s top goalscorers, based on data from 2006.

Musona is ranked third behind Benard Parker and Siphiwe Tshabalala with 40 goals across all competitions. However, many have been trying to connect the dots about his whereabouts after his photos with former Liverpool star Roberto Firmino made the rounds on social media.

CAREER
Musona started his youth career with Manyame FC in 2005 before he joined Haka United in 2006. A year later, he joined Aces Youth Soccer Academy. His command of the game saw him joining Soweto giants Kaizer Chiefs in 2009.

He undoubtedly had his shot at fame against the backdrop of his move to Kaizer Chiefs. No doubt he was clinical on goal. He netted over 20 goals during his first full season across all competitions.

During his first full season with the Kaizer Chiefs, he won the Golden Boot Award with 15 goals. He became the first Kaizer Chiefs player to end as the top scorer in the Premier League since Collins Mbesuma.

Vodacom Challenge
Two Telkom Knockout Cups
Against his newfound fame in the Premier League, he joined German outfit 1899 Hoffenheim in 2011. However, his stint at Hoffenheim was not as colourful as many thought it would be. Knowledge Musona joined Augsburg and Kaizer Chiefs on loan, respectively.

In 2015, he joined Belgian outfit Oostende. He made over 100 appearances for the club before he joined Anderlecht. However, he was loaned out to Lokeren in 2019 and Eupen.

RUMOURED KAIZER CHIEFS RETURN
In 2020, Mamelodi Sundowns coach Pitso Mosimane confirmed that he would not shy away from pursuing Knowledge Musona if he was available. Pisto Mosimane said, “He’s the kind of player I would take because he scores many goals.”

In 2021 against his stint with Eupen, he made headlines back home. Rumour mill had it that Kaizer Chiefs were ready to lure the winger back to the PSL, but nothing materialised.

Musona went on to join Al-Tai in the Saudi Professional League. His big-money move saw him becoming one of the highest-paid Zimbabwean players. In 2023, he joined Al-Riyadh. With Al-Riyadh, he has since played 21 games.
