Zandie Khumalo-Gumede to take the stand at the Senzo Meyiwa trial today

When asked about stating the ongoing Senzo Meyiwa trial in an interview in October 2022, Zandie claimed she felt at ease. As soon as she learned that she could have to testify in court, she posted her opinions on social media.

“Yesterday I said to him [her husband] Brigadier so and so, called. They wanna come to the house on Thursday and consult with me because they want me to go and testify on the SM case,” she wrote in the caption of a post dedicated to her husband, Hloni Gumede. “He calmly said ‘abeze phela’ (let them come), and suddenly I was at peace.” She also thanked her husband being, “the best dad in the world” and the one who “makes things happen” and being her “source of strength.”

During his testimony last week, Senzo’s companion Mthokozisi Thwala, who was present on the night of the murder, claimed that two guys stormed into the house and demanded cash and cell phones. Due to a lack of a court interpreter, the murder case was delayed and then restarted. Unforeseen circumstances prevented the isiZulu interpreter who had been assisting with the trial from attending court. Because they had run out of choices and couldn’t locate an interpreter to continue, State Prosecutor Advocate George Baloyi requested a postponement from the court. We are unable to use our usual interpreter. He contacted this morning to let me know he wouldn’t be able to come into work because of uncontrollable circumstances.

He is currently at Palm Ridge Court, which is 83 kilometers away from this court, despite our best efforts to find a substitute, my lord,” stated Baloyi. To continue today, all of the defense lawyers concurred. The accused are Muzikawukhulelwa Sibiya, Bongani Sandiso Ntanzi, Mthobisi Prince Mncube, Mthokoziseni Maphisa, and Sifisokuhle Nkani Ntuli. They are accused of premeditated murder, attempted murder, robbery with aggravating circumstances, possession of firearms without a permit, and possession of ammunition. Everyone has entered a not guilty plea.
