On Tuesday, the University of Johannesburg made the announcement that Dr. Phumzile Mlambo Ngcuka would be the new Chancellor of the University as of October 2022. The announcement has received mixed emotions from the public with the majority in favour of the decision. The former United Nations (UN) Under-Secretary-General and Executive Director of UN Women will succeed Professor Njabulo Ndebele, whose second five year term as Chancellor ends 30 September 2022. She will begin her five-year term from 1 October 2022 until 30 September 2027.

The appointment comes of strong backing from the UJ Council who believe that she is capable and worthy to lead the institution. Dr Mlambo-Ngcuka is one educated woman who has extensive knowledge in various areas of expertise. She has a Master’s degree in Philosophy from the University of Cape Town (2003), and a Doctorate in Engineering from Warwick University (2013).

OPINION

I believe that she is the right person to take on this role as she has shown her capabilities in “bigger” positions. Wherever she has been placed in, she does an honest job. I just hope there won’t be any political interference that will hinder her in her role. She’s a woman that commands respect and the choice to appoint her as the Chancellor only speaks volumes. It’s also good to see a woman in a higher position of authority after many years where women took the back burner. How she does will only be judged in the next 2/3 years to see if there are any improvements and whether or not academically the University is going in the right direction.
