The South African entertainment industry has received, with shock, the sad news of actor Mpho Sebeng’s death.
FRIEND CONFIRMS ACTOR’S DEATH
According to a post by his friend and fellow actor Zola Hashatsi, the Miseducation star lost his life in a car accident in Potchefstroom, North West, on Sunday, 5 May.
“It is with a sad, deep, painful heart to announce the passing of a young brother, friend I took in to replace us when we exited Craze TV, a thespian that was Mpho Sebeng. He was in car accident this morning around Klerksdorp. This one hurts and I’m not OK.
“His star was only beginning to shine. What a loss, he was only 30 years young. I’ll send more info, as times go. Will be with the family this week. Please note I’m not taking any calls,” Hashatsi wrote on Instagram.
ABOUT MPHO SEBENG
1. Only 31 years old – according to OS Management, Sebeng was only 31 years old. He was born on 1 December 1992.
2. First acting break – Sebeng had been in the acting industry for almost 20 years. His first television debut was on Justice For All as well as Zero Tolerance, which later went to win multiple awards. He further got roles on Bay of Plenty, eTV’s Scandal and The Throne. While in high school, he received his most prominent role on Winnie (the story about the life of the late Winnie Mandela) where he played Tsietsi and got to meet box office actors Jennifer Hudson and Terrence Howard. Ring of lies was the late actor’s first major lead role on prime time television. His performance earned him a nomination at the 2018 South African Film & Television awards for “Best Male Actor” in a telenovela. Sebeng has also had acting roles on Netflix shows Savage Beauty and Miseducation.
3. Also a rapper – not only was Sebeng a talented actor, he also tried his hand at rappinig. In 2019, he released his debut hip-hop song titled Thuso Phala Anything. Speaking to TshisaLIVE at the time, he said: “This one hurts and I’m not OK. His star was only beginning to shine. What a loss, he was only 30 years young. I’ll send more info, as times go. 4. First born – Sebeng was the eldest in his family. He had one sibling.
5. Politics and philosophy – Sebeng matriculated in 2011 at West Ridge High School, attaining 2 distinctions. He’s high school achievements include being the first to get full colours for drama at 17 years old, he was also vice-captain of his high school rugby team, partook in soccer and also got full colours for athletics. After high school, he went on to study politics and philosophy at the University of Witwatersrand.
