The South African entertainment industry has woken up to the sad news of the untimely passing of popular DJ and MC, Mashata – real name – Peter Mabuse.

Mashata was shot and killed in a hail of bullets in Soshanguve, a township situated north-West of Pretoria.

DJ MASHATA REPORTEDLY SHOT AND KILLED
Gauteng police spokesperson Col Noxolo Kweza said the police have opened a murder and attempted murder docket.

“[The] shooting involved two men aged 46 and 45 years during the early hours of today [Sunday]. One victim died in hospital while the other was injured,” she said.

“The two victims were driving near TUT (Tshwane University of Technology) in Soshanguve when shots were fired at their vehicle. The suspects fled and police are following several leads.”

The DJ, who was also popularly known as “Msindo” or Noisemaker”, allegedly played his last set at his All Black event which was hosted at Epozini Lifestyle in Soshanguve Block G.

Pictures of his bullet-ridden vehicle are also making the rounds on social media.

Mashata was born in Hammanskraal, Gauteng, and grew up in Mabopane – a residential township situated in the Tshwane Metropolitan Municipality, to the north of Pretoria in Gauteng. He studied at the Tshwane University of Technology.

Mashata became popular on social media for combining his love for comedy, broadcasting and soul music. In his much-loved videos, he would hilariously talk about relationships and being in love and often make scenarios during storytimes with soul music playing in the background.

He has also worked as a sports analyst at TUT FM 96.20 and as a stadium announcer for Orlando Pirates FC before becoming a stadium announcer for Mamelodi Sundowns FC’s home games. In addition, he owned an entertainment company called Mashata-Tainment.

Although regarded as a comedian, Mashata admitted to not being funny during his interview with Dineo Ranaka and Sol Phenduka on Kaya FM in December 2022.

During the interview, he revealed that he got the Mashata nickname because he was very loud at school and in the streets, but was very quiet and struggled to express himself at home because he was fearful of his father.

RELATIONSHIP WITH THE LATE DJ SUMBODY
Mashata was close friends with slain musician DJ Sumbody — real name Oupa John Sefoka. The MC was also the programme director at Sumbody’s funeral.

The Ayepyep Lifestyle co-owner was gunned down in Woodmead, Johannesburg, on 20 November 2022 – the morning of his annual All White picnic.

In January this year, another one of DJ Sumbody’s friends, DJ Vettys, was shot and rushed to the hospital.
