Nandipha Magudumana and Thabo Bester have been jokingly compared to South Africa’s Bonnie & Clyde. But where does her husband Mkhuseli fit in?

Despite helping her convicted rapist and murderer boyfriend escape prison in 2022 – and skipping the country with him a year later – the celebrity skin doctor is legally married to the Johannesburg medical doctor.

Nandipha has also continued to wear her wedding ring during her court appearances.In the Shomax docuseries Tracking Thabo Bester, Nandipha Magudumana’s brother Nathi Sekeleni questions his sister’s relationship status.

Nathi was introduced to Bester as his sister’s “mentor” TK Nkwana, a businessman based in New York.

Of his sister, he said: “Why would you call your business partner babe or baby? You are married”.

THREE’S A CROWD?
Nandipha Magudumana and Thabo Bester allegedly embarked on an explicit affair while he was behind bars after being convicted of rape and murder in 2012. He was serving three concurrent life sentences.

Around the same time, Nandipha married Mkhuseli Magudumana in 2013, who is also a medical doctor. The former couple share two daughters together: Ayana and Aziza.But according to an affidavit, Magadumana claimed she was Bester’s “customary wife.” In a tweet posted following her arrest, former friend Redi Tlhabi claims the couple divorced in 2022. However, conflicting reports claim that Nandipha is still legally married to Mkhuseli.

This was confirmed in Nandipha’s bail application, where she revealed that she is currently separated from her husband.

In her sworn statement, Nandipha claims she met Thabo Bester at Wits University in 2006, where he allegedly studied theology. Bester, however, only has a grade 7 education, claims official reports.

She also claims that she and Bester began dating in 2017, and he paid lobola for her in 2020.

WHERE IS NANDIPHA MAGUDUMANA’S HUSBAND?
While Nandipha Magudumana’s life of crime is expected to be made public in her trial, which kicks off in June, her husband has kept a low profile.

Mkhuseli has yet to make a public statement or appearance in court in support of his wife.

According to IOL, Mkhuseli has initiated a divorce in recent months. He has also shunned media interviews.

“THE OLD LIRA IS GONE”
She also noted her fans’ curiosity about what really went on in her life those two years. According to her, that two-year experience brought so much change that she considers her current self completely new and “the “old Lira” gone.

“People were initially interested in my recovery journey and, as time went by, started asking when I would perform again. I have been practising to perform as part of my recovery and have come to accept that the old Lira is gone.

“I wondered who the new Lira would be, and I have been getting to know her. I feel ready to share her with the public,” said Lira.

According to IOL, Bassline Fest’s Paige Holmes remarked that this represents new beginnings for the singer and songwriter who considers her total transformation as a “stroke of luck.”
