Anele Tembe investigation update: Will family finally get answers?

The family of Anele Tembe – who was engaged to rapper AKA or Kieran Forbes – will finally hear news of an investigation into her death.

According to police, a formal inquest on the young woman’s untimely death will be heard before a court.

A year ago, Forbes was shot and killed by hired hitmen in Durban. In 2021, Tembe fell to her death off the tenth floor of a Cape Town hotel. According to the rapper’s own admission, the couple argued just moments before her death.

ANELE TEMBE INQUEST: POLICE SHARE NEW INFO
In the months that followed Anele Tembe’s death, AKA was accused of being involved, a claim he vehemently denied. At the time of his own death, a leaked letter to the National Prosecuting Authority (NPA) revealed how the Tembe family suspected the rapper of foul play.

According to Sunday World, the NPA responded with news that Tembe’s death would be revisited. They also claimed that the family “made representations” questioning their initial decision not to prosecute anyone following their inquest.

Speaking to The South African, Western Cape police spokesperson Captain Frederick Van Wyk stated that the investigation into the circumstances surrounding the death of Anele Tembe was never closed and is still active.

He said: “The matter is scheduled for a formal Inquest at the Cape Town Magistrates’ court from 15 April 2024.

“The Investigation has been completed. The family of Anele Tembe has been updated constantly on the progress made in the case. To date, the investigating officer remains in contact with the family”.

The inquest is set to provide an indication of whether any criminal offence occurred and if this is the reason for Tembe’s death.

After AKA’s death on 10 February 2023, a leaked letter to the NPA revealed how Anele Tembe’s family suspected the rapper had allegedly pushed her off the hotel balcony.

The letter – from the family’s attorneys – also shared their beliefs about what happened during and after Anele’s fatal fall.

This included allegations that AKA:

Partied and drank AFTER Anele’s death with a group of friends
IGNORED Anele, who was still alive for 20 minutes after the fall
He cleaned up blood in the hotel room, possibly concealing an altercation.
Made a call to reception for assistance AFTER her fall
