‘Need this’: Anele wants to buy Mandela’s swag-worthy baseball jacket

While many South Africans are disheartened to see the personal belongings of the late Nelson Mandela go on auction, a few have made light of the situation surrounding the former president. One TV personality, Anele Mdoda, has even jokingly asked to purchase a special item.

This week, a list of the items set for sale was made public. They included an identity document and clothing belonging to the freedom fighter.

The auction – set to take place in New York next month – has been approved by Nelson’s oldest daughter, Makaziwe.

MANDELA AUCTION TO GO AHEAD, DESPITE BACKLASH
While members of Nelson Mandela’s family – including the children of his third wife, Graca Machel – have spoken out against the auction, it appears that it will go ahead.

Seventy items will be sold to the highest bidder, Guernsey’s auction house, on 22 February 2024.

They included his ID book, several shirts and pairs of sunglasses, a walking stick, and even his hearing aid.

Last month, the South African Heritage Resources Agency lost a two-year battle to block the sale of the items. This week, Minister of Sport, Arts and Culture Minister Zizi Kodwa also condemned the auction,

He said in a statement: “It is important for us to record and tell our stories to deepen our heritage. The legacy of former president Mandela and many others who have contributed to getting South Africa to where it is today as a free, democratic, and culturally diverse nation cannot be forgotten.

“It is therefore critical to support the intervention by Sahra for the sake of maintaining the country’s rich heritage.”

ANELE WANTS THIS ITEM
Making light of the situation, Anele revealed that she’d also like a piece of the pie.

In an Instagram Story, the 947 presenter shared a pic of the late presenter wearing a New York cap and jacket. She shared: “Makaziwe, Imma need this jacket at the auction.”

Mandela was known for his love of baseball jackets and sports tracksuits.
