SuperSport United coach Gavin Hunt sat with Thisisfootball Africa in a candid interview where he spoke about his stints in the league and opened up about Phakamani Mahlambi’s woes.
Hunt opened up about Phakamani Mahlambi’s short stint and the woes that made him unpopular despite being dubbed one of the best talents to ever come from South Africa.

THE SAD STORY OF PHAKAMANI MAHLAMBI
Over the years, Hunt has been credited for giving Mahlambi his big break in the DStv Premier League during his stint at Bidvest Wits. He was once dubbed a football prodigy by Hunt, but his career has been marred with ill-discipline and long-term injuries.
During his peak, he was one of the most sought-after stars. He had his youth career with Bidvest before joining the senior team in 2015. His flair and command of the game saw him joining African giants Al Ahly in 2017, but in 2018, he joined Mamelodi Sundowns.

His stint was not as colourful as many thought it would be. It has been marred with injuries, and the star last played competitive football for Chippa United during the 2021 – 2022 season.
However, during the interview, Hunt revealed that the star was earning a fortune at the peak of his career. He has it that he went from a R200 000 base salary to R500 000. However, Hunt revealed that the star would spend R45 000 on beer, seemingly taking a toll on his career.

Now he is down and out at 26 and struggles to bounce back. During the interview, Hunt even labelled him as a ‘disgrace.’
WHERE IS HE NOW?
The star last played for Chippa United during the 2021/2022 season after being loaned by Sundowns. Since then, he has yet to play any competitive football. He has been without a club since July 2022 after Sundowns dropped him.
