Zulu King Halts Reed Dance In Tribute To Buthelezi – DETAILS

Zulu King Misuzulu kaZwelithini has made the decision to cancel the second part of the uMkhosi woMhlanga (Reed Dance) festival as a mark of respect for the recently deceased Zulu prime minister, Prince Mangosuthu Buthelezi, who passed away at the age of 95. This announcement was made while addressing Zulu maidens during the first leg of the festival at the eNyokeni Royal Palace in Nongoma.

King Misuzulu expressed that the cancellation of the second leg of the Reed Dance was intended to provide the maidens with the space and time to mourn the loss of Buthelezi. He conveyed his condolences and solidarity with the Zulu nation, describing Buthelezi as the eldest son of the Zulu people and highlighting his unwavering support for the festival.

In his emotional address, the King acknowledged that celebrating the festival in the current circumstances felt inappropriate and somber. He praised Buthelezi for his significant contributions to both South Africa and the royal family, emphasizing his commitment to truth and justice throughout his life.

Prince Mangosuthu Buthelezi, who had been discharged from the hospital just a week before his passing, will receive an official funeral. KwaZulu-Natal Premier, Nomusa Dube-Ncube, visited the late IFP founder’s family in Ulundi and assured them that the provincial government would maintain continuous contact with them. Details of the funeral arrangements will be communicated at a later date.

This cancellation of the Reed Dance’s second leg not only reflects the deep respect King Misuzulu and the Zulu nation have for Prince Buthelezi but also serves as a poignant moment of collective mourning for a revered figure in South African history. The Reed Dance Festival will conclude on the day of the announcement, with plans to resume the tradition next year if circumstances permit.
