The television industry has been a powerful tool for conveying messages and influencing society’s outlook on various issues. However, it is essential to note that broadcasting content that promotes violence and abuse can be harmful to the viewers and the society at large. Recently, Moja love, a South African television station, has been receiving negative reviews for airing a show called Isencane Lengane, which depicts the physical abuse of Thando by Siyacela, her partner.
The show has been criticized for not addressing the issue with the seriousness it deserves, especially in a country where abuse is a serious problem. Many viewers have expressed their disappointment in Moja love for not taking action against Siyacela and for allowing him to continue abusing Thando on national television. The fact that Siyacela’s behaviour is being broadcasted to millions of viewers sends the wrong message to society that abuse is acceptable, which is not the case.
It is commendable that Thando was brave enough to speak out against the abuse and seek intervention from the elders. However, it is essential to note that abuse is a criminal offense, and the perpetrator needs to face the law. The elders’ intervention might be helpful in resolving the issue, but it is not a long-term solution to the problem. Siyacela needs to be held accountable for his actions and face the consequences of his behaviour.
