Hulisani Ravele, a seasoned broadcaster has come under fire following a tweet she posted about the late Mandla “Mampintsha” Maphumulo’s funeral arrangements.
In her tweet, Hulisani questioned why KwaZulu-Natal government would be paying a portion of Mampintsha’s funeral costs.
“Why is the government paying for a citizen’s funeral? A citizen who was not an official, not killed by any accident, catastrophe, natural event, or anything that would warrant the spending of taxpayer’s money”. Hulisani wrote on Twitter, while she mentioned @PresidencyZA in her post.
This has sparked outrage among many people, who feel that Hulisani was out of line and insensitive for questioning the government’s decision.
After social media users came for her, she said she was unaware that a funeral of a non-official government person being categorized also meant that the government would pay for it. Hulisani also said she thought it only meant that the deceased would receive official honors, such as a flag, and permission to be buried in special places in the cemetery.
