In Florida, a mother murdered her own daughter before freezing the body. The following 65 years will be spent in prison for Keishanna Thomas, 33. On August 9, she entered a no contest plea to the counts of second-degree murder.
In a freezer, her daughter Janiya Thomas, age 11, was discovered dead back in October 2015. Keishanna killed Janiya through hunger, drowning, and asphyxiation before having the freezer sent to family members.
But the medical examiner was unable to pinpoint a single cause of death. According to prosecutor Arthur Brown, Janiya’s prolonged storage in the freezer made it difficult for the medical examiner to determine the precise cause of death.
Keishanna informed the judge that she was entering a plea of not guilty in order to protect her other children from a trial. She may have had no other option but to act honorably. When Keishanna’s five children were being sought for by Manatee County Child Protective Services, Janiya was initially reported missing.
Janiya’s body was discovered in the freezer after an estimated 16 months due to a tip from her grandmother and aunt. Evidently, Janiya’s severe incontinence had irritated her mother.
Keishanna had been the subject of an inquiry by child protective services, but she was always able to explain why Janiya wasn’t present.
It would have been a clue for child protective services to inquire at the school about Janiya’s attendance. Janiya, rest in peace. People, please share.
