The announcement has received mixed emotions from the public with the majority in favour of the decision. The former United Nations (UN) Under-Secretary-General and Executive Director of UN Women will succeed Professor Njabulo Ndebele, whose second five year term as Chancellor ends 30 September 2022. She will begin her five-year term from 1 October 2022 until 30 September 2027.

OPINION

I believe that she is the right person to take on this role as she has shown her capabilities in “bigger” positions. Wherever she has been placed in, she does an honest job. I just hope there won’t be any political interference that will hinder her in her role. She’s a woman that commands respect and the choice to appoint her as the Chancellor only speaks volumes. It’s also good to see a woman in a higher position of authority after many years where women took the back burner. How she does will only be judged in the next 2/3 years to see if there are any improvements and whether or not academically the University is going in the right direction.

Was this the right decision made in order to better the education in our country?
