Skeem Saam – MaNtuli and Sthoko spark black tax debate

It goes without saying that black tax is a cultural norm in many communities.

The issue of black tax popped up like a can of beer on social media after an episode aired on Skeem Saam.

In the episode, MaNtuli invited her relatives for Christmas after her daughter Sthoko brought home Christmas groceries.

The family has been struggling to make ends meet and one would have expected MaNtuli to have been more responsible in her approach.

It sparked the debate of black tax as viewers of the show have been discussing how black tax affects many Mzansi families after the epic episode aired on Tuesday night.

“MaNtuli is going to suffer the consequences when January disease starts biting,” said one viewer.

“The relatives were also starving back home since the day Sifiso lost his job. The fact that he once took MaNtuli in does not mean she owes him,” said another.

Many South African families want to be seen eating and drinking nice things on Christmas Day. Even the poorest of the poor also want to be counted.
