Ghana braiding style can be observed in Hieroglyphs and sculptures. It can be seen at the back of the head of a sphinx. This style managed to survive through the Middle Passage until the Western civilization. Some slaves create curvier and more complicated designs to show their defiance and protest when their masters want to straighten their hair.
